Thangkas

Tibetan thangka painting is a highly developed and important means of religious expression. The deities depicted in the paintings are visual embodiments of aspects of enlightend mind (ie, compassion, wisdom, power, etc). Tantric Buddhist meditation involves the visualization of a particular deity along with corresponding invocations, mantras, offerings and aspiration prayers. Thangkas are used as visualization aids and also as a wholesome force to produce a beneficent atmosphere.

The painting of a thangka is, in itself, a religious act. The depiction of the deity, it's colors, gestures, proportions and ornaments are strictly governed. The only "artistic liscense" given to the artist is in the style of the sky, landscape and a few subtle artistic techniques such as color saturation and shading.

The thangka paintings displayed on this page were hand picked for their fine quality and reasonable prices. Because the painting of a thangka is a unique act of devotion each painting is "one of a kind" - there is no mass production of high quality thangkas. Once the painting shown in the images is sold we will take it off the website. Please note that Radiant Heart Studios photographs the paintings before we sell them. You may purchase the original but we retain the right to use the photo reproductions in the future.

Every thangka comes framed in brocade, sewn in the traditional way. To keep the image file sizes small the thumbnail and enlarged images don't show the full surrounding brocade borders which add approximate 300% to the size of the painting. A strip of the brocade is shown at the bottom of each enlargement so that you can see the colors we chose for the brocade border. We try to match the quality and colors of the brocade to the thangka. If you want to see a thangka image with the brocade - let us know and we'll email you a larger image. We list the size of the painting as well as the finished size with the brocade border.

You may purchase any of these thangkas on line but should you prefer to deal with a human being more directly we'd be happy to talk with you by phone or email.
