This traditional flag is known as a "Mikha Reversing Flag." According to Tibetan tradition "back biting" and "bad talk" (mikha) can cause one to have obstacles, accidents, and loss of wealth. The symbols and dharani (written spell) on the flag return the negativity back to the initiator -not in a destructive way but in a kind, pacifying way.

The story of how i aquired this flag is indicative of Bhutanese generosity.   I saw this unique design on a flag in front of a new house being built in Bumthang, Bhutan. I found the owner of the house who told me the prayer flag was used to protect against "mikha"- the negative effects of other people's jealousy and envy. He said that if I returned to his house in a few days he would give me one the flags.  I found out later that he walked all day to a monastery in the mountains where the flags are printed.  He spent the night and walked all day returning to his house.  He would accept no payment for his effort.  The original flag was printed from a wood block and was not very clear.  I redrew it, had a Lama check the accuracy of the text and made a photo silk screen.  The prints we make now are crisp and clear.
